How I Reflect on the Past Year and Set My Intention for the Next.

A moment to pause before the new year

I’m currently on the train to Stockholm for some holiday celebrations, leaving a powdery Åre behind.

I love traveling by train, it’s one of the best places for me to focus, get things done, and still have time to read or listen to podcasts.

Right now, I’m working on my annual review, something I do each year to reflect on what’s happened.

It gives me perspective on all the good things that have taken place, what I’ve learned from moments that felt tough at the time (but now seem like they were meant to be), and helps me appreciate the amazing people around me.

It also allows me to look ahead and envision what I’m excited about in the coming year.

My 3-step annual review process

Do you want to reflect on your year, too? Here’s how I do it:

1️⃣ Revisit the year

I start by remembering what actually happened, looking through my calendar, photos, and any notes I’ve made. Sometimes I even sketch out a simple timeline to see the big picture.

2️⃣ Reflect

I highlight the moments that stand out, both uplifting and challenging, and think about what I’ve learned. Then I ask myself a few key questions:

  • Biggest highlights: Which accomplishments make me proud?

  • Toughest moments: What lessons can I carry forward?

  • Key people: Who made a real difference in my year and why?

  • Gratitude: What am I truly thankful for?

  • More or less: What do I want to invite more (and less) of next year?

  • Let go: What do I want to release before stepping into the new year?

3️⃣ Set an intention

Finally, I choose a word, phrase, or feeling to guide me in the year ahead, a simple reminder of where I want my focus and energy to go.

It doesn’t have to be complicated. Give yourself the time and space to reflect, and let the insights gently guide your vision for the new year.

Enjoy the process. 🌿
